Who is the Orphan?

An estimated 5.4 million children are social orphans who have living parents, but live outside of family care, typically in orphanages or on the street. More than 150 million children live with orphan status, having had one or both parents die. 1 billion children have an orphan spirit, having experienced abuse, neglect, or exploitation, and feel alone, worthless with no sense of purpose and little hope. War, disease, natural disasters, and other crises increasingly threaten children and families.

Why the Church?

The Bible calls us to defend and care for orphans, reflecting God’s compassion and love for the fatherless (James 1:27, Isaiah 1:17). Research shows that children best develop and thrive in safe, stable, and nurturing families, with the greatest opportunity to reach their full God given potential. The Church is both global and local. It’s perfectly placed to engage with many other partners in supporting and strengthening families, so that orphaned and vulnerable children thrive. When local leaders like you work together to solve the orphan crisis, your contribution multiplies to impact thousands of vulnerable children and families.
