Around the world, poverty is one of the main reasons children are separated from their families and placed in residential care. In Thailand, research shows that most children in institutions still have living relatives who simply lack support.
In this short video, Kimberly Quinley, Executive Director and Co‑founder of Step Ahead Foundation, reflects on what she sees in her community: families who love their children deeply but feel overwhelmed and alone.
Strengthening families does not always begin with large programs; it begins with small acts of presence, care, and kindness. We can all do something. It might be taking a moment to check on a neighbor raising children alone, helping a parent whose bus is running late, offering a meal to a grandmother caring for several children, or simply listening without judgment.
When communities take small steps to support caregivers, families become stronger and children can remain where they belong: in safe, loving homes. Every child deserves a family, and every community can play a part in making that possible.
