How to Build a Team and Get Involved in Orphan Sunday

Orphan Sunday is not just a day — it's a catalyst for movement. It is an opportunity to mobilize churches and leaders in your community and nation to equip believers to pray and respond to the needs of children in their community. As we see in the story of Orphan Sunday from Zambia to Ukraine, a small step can lead to very significant impact as people come together with God and His heart for orphaned and vulnerable children.

Whether you're organizing something big or small in your church, community, or nation, the most important step is to build a team and invite others to participate with clarity and purpose.

Start With People, Not Just a Plan

Don’t try to do it alone. Gather a small group of people who share a heart for children and families. They may have different skills, backgrounds, and availability—but together, you form the foundation of a powerful local response.

Ask:

  • Who loves children and wants to help?
  • Who’s great at organizing or communicating?
  • Who has connections to church or community or national leaders?
  • Who can pray with passion?

Even 3–5 people can be enough to start!

Plan with Purpose

Before choosing your activities, reflect on this question:

“What do we want people to do after Orphan Sunday?” Plan backwards from that answer. Whether it’s inviting someone to foster, pray regularly, or support a local ministry—make the message clear and practical.

Offer simple ways to get involved:

  • Host a prayer night or info lunch
  • Share a story or video in church
  • Lead a donation drive for vulnerable children
  • Start a small support group for foster/adoptive families
  • Invite a speaker from a local ministry

Make Space for Everyone

Not everyone can foster or adopt, but everyone can do something. Create a culture where every person, every age, every background is welcome to take one small step. Make it easy, make it clear, and make it personal.

Build a Culture, Not Just an Event

Use Orphan Sunday to start something lasting. With a united team and clear vision, your church can become a place where children are seen, families are strengthened, and vulnerable lives are transformed—long after the event ends.
